(Not a Cat Question?)

sick kitten

I adopted a 13 week old kitten from the SPCA today. The kitten was neutered 3 days ago. They said he seemed to have a little bit of an upper respritory infection and gave me a bottle of ammoxycillan with instructions to give him 1/2cc twice a day. He seems to be quite ill (sneezing and congestion) I can hear him when he is breathing. He has only taken a small amount of water one time today. I am concerned he may become dehydrated also. How much water should he be taking and should I give him water with the dropper they gave me to administer the antibiotics?

Dear friend,

This poor baby is not eating because he feels really bad and he cannot smell his food. He has been overwhelmed by surgery, upper respiratory illness, shots, new home, etc.

Get a bottle of unflavored pedialyte and a can of canned cat food and a dropper. It is best not to contaminate the medicine droppere.

Give him 1 dropper of pedialyte evry 10 minutes for an hour. Water down the cat food to a gruel - let him smell it - give him one dropper every 15 minutes for two hours. Keep alternating til he wants to lick up the gruel himself. Make a steamroom by running your shower on hot and take him in for 15 minute intervals. That will break up tthe congestion. It wil take four doses of amoxi before he feels better.

Please let me know how he is and if you have any more questions. I am happy to help in any way possible.

Thnak you for rescuing this baby and saving his life. May God bless you.

Very sincerely,

Terri
