Question

Lethargic cat

Sent to Cat Experts August 05, 2006 7:54 p.m.

We're cat sitting for our neighbor's cat and came home today to find him lying under the rear of the car in the driveway crying. We got him from under the car and brought him in the house thinking he was just hot.
His breathing was heavy.
He is not hungry or thirsty as he usually is.
When he did move, his hind end appeared to be dragging on one side.

It has now been a couple of hours, and his breathing appears to be normal, but he went to the side of the living room behind an end table and is just lying there.

Is there anything we should watch for?

Thanks,

Denise Meisner

Is it possible he has gotten hit by a car or attacked by a dog? Since you are pet sitting him I highly recommend trying to contact the owners to get permission to have a vet see him. He may have gotten hit, attacked or had a stroke. Is he able to walk now? Is he eating and drinking yet?

As of late last night, he had thrown up something unidentifiable and had an accident on the rug. We put him on the enclosed deck and he stayed in the corner.

When we got up this morning, he is nowhere in sight. He is an outdoor cat, so we're thinking he ate something nasty and perhaps it got out of his system.

We find it hard to believe he is nowhere in sight based on how he was last night, but he went down three stairs and we have searched everywhere for him. There was no blood when he threw up or when he had his accident, so I believe that may be a good sign?

Thanks for your reply.

Well I hope it is a good sign though it could be just the opposite. Outside cats do have a tendency to go away to die when they are hurt or ill so keep your eyes open for him. I would search the area good- under bushes, in the woods, under any cars, any place that has any shade at all and good luck.
