Question

Sent to Cat Experts August 05, 2006 7:08 p.m.

I have three cats and last week one of them was listless and not eating. I took her to the vet and had blood work and x-rays taken and there didn't seem to be anything wrong with her so the vet suggested she may have a stomach virus and to keep her on chicken and broth for a few days. I did and she is fine now. One of my other cats seems to be experiencing the same symptoms, is it possible that they can pass a stomach virus to one another?

How old are your cats?
Do they all eat the same food?
Are they all indoor cats?

Any potty problems?

Two of my cats are four years old, this includes the one that was sick last week. The one that is currently lethargic and disinterested in food is six years old. As stated he is eating a little chicken with broth and some soft cat treats. I believe he is going to the bathroom but with three cats and my working a lot of hours it is a little hard to tell.

Dear friend,

Cats do get certain non specific viral infections Because they are viral in nature they are not commonly treated with antibiotics as those are only for bacterial infections.

TH\he best treatment is to keep him fed and hydrated. I would use plain pedialye. Also water canned cat food down to a gruel and feed one dropper every ten minutes for two hours. You can certainly use chicken and broth but be sure it has no onion or garlic seasoning in it. I would also give all the cats one teaspoon of plain yogurt every day to put "good" bacteria in their system.

Please let me know how your boy is doing and if you have any further questions. I will be happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri

My cat is eating a little and purring when I pet him but he seems somewhat irritable. Is this normal for a cat not feeling well?

Yes! very oftenpurring is a sign of pain or discomfort. As long as he will eat at all it is a good sign. Follow the directions in the above answer and he should be fine.

Let me know how he is and if you need anything at all. I will always be here for you.

Very sincerely,

Terri
