Hi,

What has a slight odor, the saliva or the cat in general?

Excessive salivation can be an indication of many different illnesses in cats, but the first thing to check is the mouth--for abscessed/infected or loose teeth, infected gums, sores in mouth, on tongue, in throat.

If your cat looks ill and is having this excessive salivation issue, you definitely have to bring him/her to the vet for evaluation ASAP.

Ingesting a poisonous substance is also a possibility, from your description. Does your cat go outside at all? If so, s/he could have ingested anything from antifreeze to rat poison to garden insecticides. S/he also could have been exposed to another cat infected with an illness/disease. Is your cat vaccinated and up to date on the vaccinations? If your cat stays indoors only, s/he might have gotten into household cleansers or chewed on houseplants, many of which (plants/flowers) are toxic to cats.

In any case, please take your cat to the vet right away so an evaluation can be made and the proper treatment given.

I hope your cat is doing better very soon! Please let me know what the vet says. Thanks!

Reply to Jessesmom's Post: The saliva has a slight odor. She looks like she's about to try to clean herself, her front, but doesn't appear to be able to stick her tongue out. She appears unable to clean off the the excess saliva collecting on the bottom of her jaws. Breathing seems to accelerate moments at a time.
