Struvite crystals in female 3 yr old cat urine

Sent to Cat Experts August 02 08:41 AM

2 weeks ago our 3 yr old healthy cat was diagnosed with struvite crystals in urine. She could only urinate just a drop though she tried many times/day. Her vet said to feed Science Diet C/D can food and force feed water since she won't drink. The situation got better for a few days and is now worse. Question: is there another treatment that can cure this problem permanently or should the cat be put down.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: No antibiotics. Urine sample showed no evidence of infection or bacteria present. We were told that she has a small bladder. She recently had a health checkup and was found quite healthy. This came on very suddenly.

Dear Paul,

Struvite crystals can cause a thick gummy, molasses like substance in your cats bladder.he good news is that unlike calcium oxilate crystals, struvite can be disolved. PLease read the following:

In addition to canned food, you want to even add water to that. The more fluid the better to flush out the kidneys and bladder. A few drops of fish oil on her food will improve kidney function. Also give her one drop every day of unsweetened (only) cranberry juice to lower the PH and acidity of her urine.

She is still a very young cat and hopefully you can get a handle on this problem and control it for her.

Please let me know if you still have any questions. I will be happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri
