Question

My cat's paw is swollen all the way up to the middle

Sent to Cat Experts July 30, 2006 1:11 p.m.

My cat's paw is swollen all the way up to the middle of his leg. He was declawed several years ago and occassionally chews on this one paw, causing swelling. Is there something I can give him to help with the swelling?

How old is he?
Do you see any cut, sore or abscess?

Did he go outdoors?

He is 3 yrs. old, there are no cuts and he doesn't go outdoors. He runs around a lot chasing the other cat and occassionally it just swells up. this is the first time it's been swollen up to the middle of his leg. He doesn't seem to be in pain and I would like to give him 1/8 of an aspirin for the swelling.

Dear friend,

Please stand by for detailed answer. Please DO NOT give him any aspirin.

Thanks,

Terri

Dear friend,

Aspirin is not safe for cats and can have serious side effects. The best thing to do is soak his leg in warm water and epsom salts three times a day. Then apply cool compresses - not cold. his should reduce the swelling. For a natural anti-inflammatory you can give him a 16th of a teaspoon of Turmeric (curcumin) mixed in his food.

Please let me know how he is and if you have more questions. I will be happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri

He was declawed 3 years ago and I had his paw checked the last time it did this at the vet's office. They ran x-ray's to see if there was a bone fragment or something left in his paw and found nothing. I am really looking for a way to bring the swelling down for him.
