Question

My cat has had this infection on her face

Sent to Cat Experts July 29, 2006 9:08 p.m.

My cat has had this infection on her face, normally on her lips. Took her to the SPCA and they gave her a shot of steroids and an antibiotic to give her, this was back in Jan/Feb. It seemed to be okay for a while, now what she has is new. Here are pictures of it , one side is what it looks like when it just starts, http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/lieta/Brown003.jpg . Then after a few days, it gets worse, and then looks like this, http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/lieta/Brown004.jpg       http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/lieta/Brown002.jpg     http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/lieta/Brown001.jpg

Please help me, is there anything I can do for her? Without taking her to the vet for about 2/3 weeks? I just cant afford it right now : / Please help

They checked her for parasites (internal and external)?

Did they say why they gave her steroids ? I can understand the antibiotic for any secondary infection, but what did they say when they saw this and treated it?

By the way, this is a gorgeous-gorgeous cat and she seems very cooperative! Russian Blue (or variation) ?

They told me its common in cats to get an infection on thier face from plastic food bowls.. But this is a continuious thing. It wont go away, i have no idea what to do for her. They didnt tell me exactly WHY i didnt know why she needed the steriods. They told me i may have to keep coming back to get more shots, but they dont recomend it. ? Totally clueless.

I don't know what she is, i paid 80$ for her in a pet store. She is a VERY good cat, i'm scared of losing her, she's only a year old.

She looks like she's at least part Russian Blue, but the one thing I'm sure of is that she's 100% loved (good for you).

Who is telling you she's allergic to plastic (having a reaction to plastic bowls) ? What did they do to arrive at this conclusion?

Were blood and/or urine tests done? Did they scrape the areas on her face to do a culture or biopsy?

Are there any other areas of her body that are effected?

She's probably going to be just fine - I'm not suspecting this is anything awful, just get back to me about these questions ok?

SPCA told me a lot of cats get a reaction to platic bowls. So i took it away.

No, they didnt do any tests on her. They just looked at her.

No other parts are infected, just happens to her face.

We have another cat, but nothing happens with her, she's perfectly fine.

OK, let's try this until your next vet visit is scheduled (and perhaps you can find another vet in the meantime?)

Pick up any anti-fungal cream that says it treats 'ringworm' on the label. Dab it on these areas (carefully avoiding eyes/mouth) two or three times a day. Make sure you keep hands washed after every time you touch her.

Ringworm, if this is what it is, is not a 'worm', but a fungus. It often self-resolves (which may explain why this goes away and returns), but it is contagious to other animals and humans (it would look pretty much the same).

It's not uncommon in pet store and/or shelter animals; however, shelters usually find it and treat it before releasing the animal.

Since you're having her treated through the ASPCA, she's probably from Pet Smart? A rescue adoption? This would mean she was foster-homed before coming to you and was likely in with other rescued cats. It's really no one's fault that this might have been missed.

If it's not better in 3 to 10 days with treatment of anti-fungal, perhaps the next visit should evaluate for mange.

Mange might sound ominous, but these days it's very manageable once properly diagnosed.

Sound reasonable?
