new litter box for my cat

I just bought a new scoop free litter box for my cat. It is the kind that automatically scoops after 20 minutes. I am having trouble getting my male cat to use it. He just sneaks up on it and stares at it. If I try to put him in it he freaks out and runs. Do you have any suggestions on how to introduce him to his new box? It does have a different kind of litter and everything.

Thanks for your help.

These boxes can be pretty upsetting to cats (but great for the cat owners!) because of the mechanical noise and motion. So, you want to turn it off while he gets used to it. During the first couple of weeks, go ahead and scoop it like you normally would. Then you can start to turn it on and see if he will adjust. Most will, once they realize that the new box is not out to get them.
