I just got a 1 year old cat from a shelter. She was quite playful and outgoing. On this past Thursday she received immunizations and was spayed. On Friday I took her to a vet for a general check up and she had a temperature of 103.8. The vet gave her a deworming pill and thought the fever might be from the immunizations. She still has a fever (over 102.9) and has been coughing a little. She is drinking water and urinating but not eating. She is alert and purrs but does not move around much.

At almost all animal shelters, rescues and SPCA's, there is one commonality when you take the cat home. No matter how clean the shelter is or how well maintained, most of the cats will go home with respiratory illnesses.

Some cats get over it on their own while others need antibiotics. Keep a close eye on the secretions from the nose and eyes. If they are green or yellow, the problem has now changed from viral (cold) to bacterial (infection). If the problem is bacterial, it will probably not resolve without antibiotics.

If she is congested, you can use warm saline to wash the eyes and pediatric nasal saline drops to help clear mucus from the nose. You can also run a humidifier. Be sure to keep her hydrated by using plain pedialyte. And be sure that she's eating.

Then see your vet if this does not improve.

I hope this helps!

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: Hi,
Thanks for your response but as she does not have any nasal or eye discharge, I did not think that this answer was very helpful. I tried to be very specific about the symptoms so that an answer could be specific to her problem. She also does not seem congested, again a symptom that was not in the description I provided. This seemed like a stock response that was not targeted to my specific question.
