Cat Seisure?
Sent to Cat Experts July 26 03:45 PM

I think my 3 year old male cat had a seisure. There was a rucus last night at 2:00am and I awoke to a lot of noice (could have been him, or the other 4 cats running around in the window and down the stairs). I found my nutered boy cat in a cardboard box they generally play in, and his back end was laying down not moving but his front end was more sitting up and scratching rather furiously and his nose was pushed into the corner of the box. He looked like he was going after a spider or something. I called to him and when he didn't look up at me or stop scratching, I went to pick him up and saw his tail was a little wet and I thought he ran through the water dish; but then realized it smelled like urine. His eyes looked a little glassy and he was not purring. After probably 2 minutes, he stopped the shaking, and I picked him up and he then walked away, okay. But, the other cats were smelling him like they knew something happened. He was fine this morning, running up the stairs for breakfast, and purring. The only thing out of the ordinary is we went away for the weekend Friday coming home Sunday, and left plenty of food and water, but perhaps he over ate? There was some food and water left over when we returned, but Phil did look a little larger. Do you think it was caused by over eating? We generally separate him and the others as he will eat his portion and then eat the other cat's portions if we don't separate them. Having gone away, we couldn't do this. What should I do if it happens again? i.e. do I pick him up, or leave him be?
Thank you,
Audrey in California

First time it happened. Oh, he previously had crystals in his urine about 8 months ago...could this be connected?

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: No medication; Yes, he eats a special urinary tract formula (expensive) from Purina I think...big grey containers (my son feeds them so I don't remember). He is eating and drinking normally; hard to tell on going potty...have 4 other cats...but I can separate him tonight and find out. How long after they eat do they usually potty (i.e. how long should I keep him separated until I know he is not going?).

Dear Audrey,

It sounds like your boy did have a seizure. I am concerned because cats do not get epilepsy. Seizures ar ususally he result of a misfunction somewhere in the body.Since he is prone o urinary tract issues - you must watch him and make sure he can potty. Somtimes cats get stressed when the owner is away so he may have developed an infection, fever or illness.

Since he is eating and drinking normally he is not feeling too bad. The first thing they do when they are sick is stop eating.

Hopefully this was an isolated incident that will not recur - however - you need to watch him carefully so yo will notice any unusual symptoms.

Please let me know what is going on with him and if yo have further questions. I am happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Is there anything I should do for him if he has another? i.e. hold his head up so he gets air...??? Or just rush him to the vet?

If he has another seizure - keep him as quiet as possible until it is over. Cover him with a towel or blanket and make sure he is clear of anything he can be hurt by, like stairs, furniture, etc. Seizures only last a few seconds. He will not remember it and go back to acting perfectly normal.

If it is during office hours - take him in when it is over. If at night, just wait til the morning.

I am hoping this was an isolated incident and will not recur. Please let me know what happens.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri
