Question

My female cat is spraying on my leather furniture.

Sent to Cat Experts July 26, 2006 1:59 p.m.

My female cat is spraying on my leather furniture. The spray is not clear - it has a bloody tint to it again. It happened at about this time last year after I took her to the vet to be spayed. What might her problem be? Don't know what to do - the next move it to take her to the SPCA.

Dear friend,

Your cat has a urinary tract infection or sttones or crystals,. She i spraying to get your attention and "communicate"to you that she is not feeling well. Cats often "talk" with their urine so they can get your attention.

This can be quickly cleared up with an antibiotic - so please see your vet with her as soon as possible.

Please let me know how she is and if you still have questions. I will be hapy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri

I took her into the vet for the same thing last year and they found nothing - no UTI, no stones, no crystals--NOTHING. Is it possible that a mistake was made when I took her to be spayed? She has become very noisey and very aggressive since being spayed. Is that a normal side affect? HELP

REPLIED Check Mark

Dear friend,

NO! that is absolutely NOT a normal side effect. In fact cats usually become very calm and docile after spay surgery. In addition, cats do not menstruate - there is no bloody discharge. You should put her on a two week round of clavamox to clear any infection. Also have the vet evaluate her anal glands as sometimes they can be the culprit for a discharge. If you think she was not spayed properly you should have her evaluated by a diffferent vet then the one that did the procedure.

Give her one drop a day of unsweetened cranberry juice and see if her symptoms resolve.

Let me know how she is.

Thanks,

Terri
