My male cat who is about 9 years old has suddenly begun having bouts of drooling, losing his balance, and has begun hiding under the furniture. The drool occurs in long, ropy strands, but is not mucousy. He paws a bit at his mouth but is not humping his back to retch and does not make any noise at all. If I go near him, he runs away. No food, solid vomit, or hair comes out. Then later, he will appear just fine. What could this be?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

This could be a couple of things. He may have a dental abscess causing the drooling or some type of obstruction in the throat or mouth. The loss of balance is a sign of a neurological issue or inner ear infection. You really need to get him into the vet so he can be started on antibiotics and treated as soon as possible. He may be mistaking the pain in his ear for a pain in his throat as they run together, so he definitely needs to be looked at by your vet. Please let me know what he finds!
