For the past week my cat of 5 years has been making a strange noice like a sneeze or a cough. I don't know if cats cough! For about 2 days she was acting lathargic and not eating. Now she is eating but still makes this noise like she is gagging and going to throw up but doesn't.    could you advice me what this is.   I have had cats before and never had this noise she makes.

Dear friend,

This action is usually a cats attempt to bring up something she feels is lodged in her intestine. It can be ingested hair or some non food item she has swallowed.

You can put some laxatone or even plain vaseline on her paw for her to lick off - do it three times a day. That will enable her to pass the item more effectively.

If this continues, gets worse or she stops eating again she will need to see her vet as she may be unable to dislodge this item.

Please let me know if you have further questions. I am happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri

Laxatone is a hairball remedy. It is actually flavored vaseline. You can get it or a similar product at any pet supply.
