(Not a Cat Question?)

Our cat is gagging up white foam, or mucusy foam.

Our cat is gagging up white foam, or mucusy foam. Otherwise, he seems fine. He's eating, drinking, etc. He's been gagging this for several hours now. Does he have something caught in his throat or is it something else. Is it an emergency?

Thank you,
Carol Wilbur

Reply to Lori's Post: I waited until 2 a.m. for your reply then called the all night animal hospital and took him in, because by then he was "crouching" and looking just miserable. They thought, on the phone, that maybe he couldn't urinate. Turns out, $413 dollars later, that he has tonsilitis. BRIGHT red tonsil (lymph node) on the left side. He had a fever. So, he'd been hacking, trying to get the thing that hurt his throat out. Anyway, he was also dehydrated, so he got subcutaneous fluids and they left in the IV catheter, so our own vet could give him IV fluids today if he still needed them. Also he got antibiotics, although his white cell count was normal. He's been at our vet since 7:30 a.m. and we haven't heard anything else. The good news: he doesn't have feline leukemia or FIV, and his other blood work was all within normal limits. His lymphocytes were very low normal, thought, at the border of the low range.

So, right now, the diagnosis remains tonsilitis and dehydration. Don't know anything else.

Hi Carol-

I apologize that none of the experts were online last nite to help you. Usually, there is someone available. I am so glad you got him taken care of. To entice him to drink (when you get him home) try putting icecubes in his water. Cats in general love ice and if his throat is hurting, it will be more soothing. Good luck with him, and please contact info@justanswer.com to request a refund for your deposit since no one got back to you in a timely manner. During the day, wait time is seldom more than 20 minutes.
