Older cat Question

My cat will be 12 year old this year. Ever since he was a young cat, he liked to sit by the tub when one of us took a shower.   We would sprinkle him with some water and he would just sit there and loved it. He also would meow if we didn't know he was there till we sprinkled him. We thought he was goofy but it was harmless. Lately though he has been different. Within the last month, he is always in the bathroom or outside the bathroom in the hall. He sticks is head in the toilet, jumps in the tub and meows loudly till someone either tells him to stop or it is time for the water to be turned on for a shower. The meows get so loud that it sounds like someone is killing him. When we check on him though, he is relaxed and looks at us like we are nuts to come running. The first time I heard him I thought he fell and broke something. He does it all times of the day and night. One time he woke my husband and I up at 3 am. He eats good, drinks from his water bowl that is changed twice a day, uses the bathroom in his litter box appropriately and seems otherwise playful. Could he be sick? I have never heard him meow this often and this loud before. Could he just be changing his ways as he gets older? How do we stop him from doing it in the middle of the night?

It may be a senility thing along with he is training you to do what he wants. I would have your vet do an exam and bloodwork just incase because at his age, there may be an underlying issue causing it but being he is eating/drinking/going potty normally, then it may be that its a behavioral issue. Keeping a slight trickle on the tub while you are gone may help. There also are water bowl's that have a waterfall aspect that entices some animals to drink more often. This may be an option being he seems to be attracted to that.
