Max the cat

My roommates cat is 13 years old, and I love him dearly and let him sleep in my room. I have two questions: When Max (the cat,of course) comes close to my face, he goes directly to my nose. Sometimes kisses my nose, but nips at it as well. Why is that?

The other question is Max is a big fat cat. He's on a diet, but when he comes in my room, I have a little container of water for him, is that making him more fat, or is it okay that he has a little container of water when he wants and is hanging out in my room?
