Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy),
Usually, when a cat has chronic trouble with hairballs, he's put on a high quality hairball food formula and also given a hairball remedy like Petromalt or Laxatone, which you can buy at Petsmart/Petco, or any pet supply store. These remedies are also sold online.
It has been found that offering a teaspoon of canned pumpkin (non-flavored--not pumpkin pie filling, just plain canned pumpkin) or baby food squash. Cats generally enjoy these extra "treats," and they may help by adding lubrication or soft bulk to help hairballs pass. The pumpkin or squash are also sometimes used to help with constipation or diarrhea, because of their added fiber.
Whether Dallas is a longhaired or shorthaired cat, daily grooming, a couple of times a day can help remove the 'dead' hair and prevent him from ingesting it upon grooming. A good cat slicker brush and fine-toothed comb are excellent for this, and if Dallas is like my Jesse, it's also a great 'bonding' session for the two of you.
I hope these suggestions have proven helpful and please let me know if you have any other questions.
