My one-year-old cat ate one of those fuzzy toy mice. He has thrown up a couple of times -- the last time it was kind of a greenish, blackish color. What should I do?

Hi,

You have to get your cat to a 24 hr. Emergency animal hospital, now!

Throwing up is getting rid of some of it, but you don't know if pieces of the toy are going to get stuck somewhere internally and cause an obstruction, or if any pieces are wrapped around any organs like the stomach, intestines, etc.

Was the mouse totally fuzzy--like all soft material, or did it have any hard parts and/or strings, (whiskers, tail, ribbon, wiggle eyes, bell) etc.? Also, did it contain catnip inside?

Do you have another one so you can show the vet what he ate? They'll most likely do x-rays to see where the parts of the toy are and then recommend treatment.

Please let me know how it goes at the vet! Good luck!

Cher

Reply to Jessesmom's Post: It is all soft material -- I don't think it has catnip in it. There were no whiskers, ribbon, wiggle eyes or bell or anything like that. It seems to have a paper-like/sawdust material in it. The mouse was about 1 inch long. We live in a rural area 150 miles from the nearest emergency vet -- it's 11:30 p.m. -- I was hoping it would be okay to wait until morning.

Hi again,

Can you try to call the ER vet and describe the situation? See how they will advise you. Also, can you call your regular vet or another local vet...do they have a phone number for emergencies and would they come into the office for you at this time of night?

If your ER is so far away, I guess you could just keep a very close eye on him, watching for more vomiting, and/or see if he moves his bowels; is he trying to eat or drink at all? How's his breathing? Does he seem to be in distress to you?

Reply to Jessesmom's Post: He's breathing fine; doesn't seem to be in any real distress except he's just really quiet -- kind of like he just doesn't feel good. Hasn't tried to eat anything for the last couple of hours and hasn't moved his bowels yet. He's not shivering or anything and doesn't seem restless. I will check to see if there is a number I can just call the emergency vet and see what they say. I really appreciate your help.
