Very sick Cat
Sent to Cat Experts July 05 02:15 AM

I think my cat is very sick, and the doctor has run several different test but could not find anything wrong. He has done a blood test, that he says has come out fine (Chem 12/CBC/T4), a Comprehensive physical Exam, Radiograph 1 view which nothing showed. He also gave him Subcutanious Fluids, and an injection of Reglan. Nothing is helping him.
At first I thought his problem was Sociological because I was gone on vacation for 17 days and I have never been gone that long before, but now I'm not so sure. Here is his symtoms that I can see. Maybe you can tell me what could be wrong with him.
He has lost a lot of weight. My kids said that he was eating and drinking, but was getting sick. They had emptyed his kitty box so I could not see his stool, but I have found now he has diehera. He looses control of his bladder also. He is shedding a lot more than he used to and has a large amount of hair missing under his neck. He acts like he wants to eat, but doesn't finish his food.
Please help. I don't want to have to put him down, but I can't spend a lot of money on him either. I've already hit the 500.00 mark and my husband is having fits. I don't want to see him suffer though. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hi,

I am so sorry that your cat (and you) are going through this. I have a couple of thoughts. First of all, when your vet ran the labwork and said the T4 was fine.....that may or may not be true. The reason I say this is cats can have what is called "sick euthyroid" -- this means that the T4 number comes up normal because whatever disease process is going on in the body is altering the value. As soon as the disease process is treated, the cat becomes hyperthyroid. The way we distinguish this is that we run what is called a "Free T4". This looks at a different portion of the thyroid hormone system and can really hone in on what is going on.

I would also be curious if your vet did a urinalysis. If so, was there sugar (glucose) in the urine? Your cat may be diabetic. This might not have shown on regular labwork if it was sent out to the lab because glucose is used by the cells as soon as the blood is drawn. You can have a normal glucose on labwork if there was any delay in processing the sample. A urinalysis would make the database complete. I would be looking for diabetes and a urinary tract infection.

You can have a urinalysis and a free T4 done for very little cost. If you just had the labwork done at a lab, they will do an "add on" test for much less than the regular price.

The final issue is that he may in fact have cancer. A one view x-ray is not really a thorough study. It takes 2 views to really see any particular part of the body. Cancer sometimes is only found by abdominal ultrasound - this usually costs about $200.

My advice to you is to spend a little bit more (less than $100) to have the urinalysis and free T4 done. Your answer is likely to be found there.

I hope I've been helpful. Please let me know if you need more information.

Reply to Dr. Lisa Boyer's Post: I did as you said and had my cat tested and there was nothing wrong with either test. They came back normal. I'm not sure what was wrong with my cat but he is doing much better now. I think maybe he was depressed or something because I was gone for two weeks and I've never been gone that long before, even though my kids were at home. But he is gaining his weight back, and is in better spirts. He still gets sick once in a while, but he has always gotton sick since I got him as a kitten. The only thing I ask is that you let your other readers know that this can happen when the pets owner goes out of town for an extended period of time and that person is the pets favorite. He or she will be missed by their pet, and may experience the same thing I did. Please tell them please don't jump the gun, and think their is something seriously wrong with him.
Thank you again for your help.
