The nerves along a cat's back and belly are very sensitive. In some cats, they are over-sensitive. When they are petted in these areas, a lot of times they'll scratch or bite. I did some research to see why he suddenly would start this behavior and couldn't come up with anything specific. I do think, given his age and the fact this is a relatively new behavior, and that his coat is becoming more "unkept" (oily) - he needs to be checked for diabetes and hyperthroidism by your vet. He is at an age where these problems tend to show up. Fortunately, they can both be treated if caught early and you should have many additional years with your kitty!
