My cat was fine, lives outside. 2 days ago he was not around all day, which is very unusual. Around 8:30, he came home staggering as if drunk. He couldn't walk a straight line and would fall over. His head is cocked to the left ,and (at first) his eyes literally jiggled from side to side. We thought he was poisoned so we called the vet who advised us to bring the cat in the following morning. Upon examination, the vet ruled out poisoning and put him on clindamycin (antibiotic). 2 days later- still wobbly and listing to left, but seems a bit more stable. Has normal breathing, and is eating and drinking fine.

Are your cats eyes moving back and forth like he was watching a tennis match?

Yes, his eyes moved very quickly side to side. They were really bad at first, but are better (calmer) today. He still has very little balance when stnading or walking. He falls over to the left and his head is tilted to left, his left eye closes more frequently. He DOESN'T have: ear infection, fever, accelerated heart rate, abnormal breathing, or sensitive areas on his body as if injured. He DOES: purr, eat, drink (alot), want to lie down a lot (unusual for him but understandable given his lack of balance), and wants to be close us. We have him quarantined in a large bathroom w/all his essentials. Have you seen this before?

Dear friend,

I know you are upset so let me try to help. Your cat has a disorder called Vestibular disease. It comes from a middle ear infection and I promise you it will cear up as a result of the antibiotics. You can read about it here:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_vestibular_disease.html

It is a good idea to keep him strictly indoors until he is completely over this. The disorder resembles motion sickness in humans so he could easily become confused and disoriented outdoors.

PLease let me know if you have any more questions or would like to discuss this further. I will be happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri
