Question

cat's toothloss and the need for surgery

Sent to Cat Experts September 29, 2004 6:38 p.m.

My cat lost two teeth. One was lost because I was playing with him and pulled a string and it got caught on the tooth and loosened it which then fell out. This was the large fang tooth. The second tooth fell out
around a yeare later which was on the same side, but not from playing. The vet said that the root of the second tooth has to come out and said the root from the first tooth should come out. Is it really necessary for this surgery? Also, after the first tooth falling out I had brought the cat to a different vet and she didn’t say that the root had to be removed.
Please respond. Thanks Karen

If the root doesn't come out, you take the risk of it abcessing which odds are it will. The one that he lost when you were playing with him probably didn't leave the root because it more than likely didn't break or rot and if it did, it also needs the root removed or it will also cause problems. The one that just fell out, there may be nerve exposed if it cracked off and will cause discomfort too. I would definately have the dental done.

Good Luck!
