I have a 7 year old cat who will not stop pooping on the floor. I don't understand because she will urinate in the litter box. It started when I moved in with my boyfriend, then when we broke up, I moved in with my mother for a few months and she used the litter box fine, no matter how dirty it got. Now that we are in our own place again after about 3 weeks here she started going on the floor again. I clean her litter box on a daily basis. She does it while I am sleeping so I can never catch her to try aversion therapy. She ionly goes on carpet, when I lock her in a room with tile flooring she will use the box regularly, again no matter how dirty it gets. I bought a piece of carpeting to put under her litter box, thinking that might help, but to no avail. How long does she need to stay in solitary confinment untill she relearns to use the litter box? Some of the sites said 4-6 weeks, but it seems cruel to me to keep her locked in a room for that long. Please help, I don't want to get rid of her, but I can't deal with this anymore.

I'm sorry you have been going through this with your girl. It seems that she has been dealing with the stress of moving and your emotional stress as have you. (Animals can sense more than we realize.) It seems as if she responds to tile flooring. Here's what I can suggest for now. Place another litter box in the area right where she was inappropriately eliminating. You mentioned that she only goes on carpet, so using tile underneath it is the best bet. Also, if all else fails, contact your vet regarding this problem. Certain medications can also aid in correcting this problem. PLEASE let me know if I can help you any further. I have dealt with this many times with clients over the years and have come to a positive result!

I have tries this method before. Doesn't work, she just finds another place on the carpet. Last night she took a crap right in the middle of my bed. This is about a 10 days after she peed on my pillows. I am at a loss. Nothing seems to work, she is in solitary with her litter box again until I can make up my mind or not to take her to a no-kill shelter, and find one in my area for that matter. I understand that she might be responding to my depression but she is not helping the situation any. It only makes me more upset now that I have to consider getting rid of her. She has been with me since she was 7 months old. But, I cannot deal with a cat who won't use the litter box.
