Whats wrong with my cat?

We have a wonderful 17year old Himalyan cat who has been very healthy until yesterday. She is walking as if she has lost her since of balance. The staggers around and falls occasionally. Even when she is sitting, her head is wobbling and her eyes are wondering. She will walk up to a wall and stand or try to jump onto something and fall. I don’t know what the possibilities could be with her. Do you have any thoughts or insight into this type of behavior. I hope she hasn’t had a stroke. We took her to the vet and they said they didn’t know what was wrong and that they could keep her and run some tests that cost over $300. We didn’t leave her because if she passes, we didn’t want her to be locked up in a cage. We want her home with her family. What do you think?
