Sent to Cat Experts May 26, 2006 10:31 a.m.

I have 3 cats. One was recently hospitalized for a blockage due to crystals forming in his urine. They have him on Hill's prescription s/d for 2 weeks then they say they want him on Hill's prescription c/d for I guess forever. THe problem is none of my cats are relly eating because they always ate together and now don't like to be separated. Is there really a difference between Hill's prescription diet and Hill's science diet so that perhaps I could put all 3 cats on Hill's science diet and keep the one cat from forming crystals yet keep them all happy?

Dear friend,

It is of the utmost importance that your cats eat, especially the sick one. It is also important the he gets a LOT of fluid - so water down the cat food if he will eat it that way. Also get a pet fountain as that encourages drinking.

Science diet is not that great a food but vets recomend it because they sell it. Here is a site for more palatable UTI food:

You should also give your boy one drop daily of unsweetened (only) cranberry juice to lower the PH and acidity of his urine as this will stop crystals from forming.

Please let me know if you have any more questions. I will be more than happy to help.

Very sincerely,

Terri

I guess I don't feel that the site you sent me to can really help me. I travel frequently for work and although my mother comes over daily to feed them , I don't think switching to a raw or canned diet will work. I do own a pet fountain and he does seem to be drinking quite regularly. I guess I really need a good dry food that will prevent this from reoccuring. Is there such a thing?

Iams makes an excellent palatable dry for UTI cats. Would you like the site for that?

yes that would be great. Also, besides the cranberry juice, do you recommend any of these supplements in pill or powder form? Or is that all hype?

Try this site as there are several good dry UTI foods offered and good info as well:

Believe it or not that little one drop of cranberyy juice works like a charm - so get your boy started on it today.

Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Warmest best wishes,

Terri
