My 14 year old has had diarrhea for weeks now. At first a stool sample showed lots of bacteria & I gave him Clavamox. That did not help another stool sample was brought in & it tested positive for Giardia. I tried to give him Metronidazole, but it was imposible. He is not eating & still has the diarrhea. I brought him to the vet again today & was given will pick up some Flagyl for him tomorrow. Is there any other treatment for Giardia?

Dear friend,

When a cat has the protozioan parasites coccidia or giardia, flagyl (which is metronidazle) is going to be the bet thing for him. However, the liquid has a God awful taste so he is going to object rather strongly.

You can try to wrap him in a towel l,like a mummy with just his head exposed. Try to throw the pill all the way in the back of his throat - the hold his mouth closed until you see him lick his lips.

However, before you try the flagyl I woulld like yo to give him some acidopholus in case he just as "bad" bacteria in his intestine. You can get it powdered in a health store - mix it with water and give him one dropper daily for 30 days. You should see a major improvement in just three doses. You can asom get some plain yogurt as that contains acidopholus and give him a teaspoon every day.

Somtimes veterinarians customarily say cats have giardia when it is actualy just bad bacteria so he may not have giardia at all.

Please let me know how he is doing.

If you have any more questions do not hesitate to ask. I will more than happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri
