Question

Our 7 year old cat is overweight and has suddenly stopped ...

Sent to Cat Experts April 23, 2006 1:28 p.m.

Our 7 year old cat is overweight and has suddenly stopped eating and drinking within the last 24 hours. She usually is at the food dish before everyone else and eats more than her share. She is very lythargic and seems to want to sit in one place and not move. We have 5 other cats and she doesn't want to interact with any of them. I put her favorite wet food in front of her and just stares at it. What could be the problem? Can we wait until Monday morning to see our Vet or should we take her to the Emergency Vet Clinic? I would like an answer a/s./a/p. Thanks! Pat Jones crazy45cats@yahoo.com

ACCEPTED Check Mark

There can be many reasons that she would quit eating and become displaced and not want to socialize with the other cats you have. It can be infection related, parasite related, toxic reaction related, or has injured herself in some way. The best thing to do is to monitor her closely try to feed her a bland diet of cooked roce and/or boiled chicken or beed as this is more tolerable to the stomach and may allow for some food intake. Try is at all possible to get a little water into her as well to prevent dehydration. Even 48 hours without food and water can cause liver, kidney, or heart damage so if this just started today and she does not become worse then you should have her seen first thing tomorrow morning. If she becomes more lethargic, starts shaking, shows and signs of nausea and vomiting, fever, or respiratory distress you would need to have her seen as soon as possible at the emergency clinic. Since this came on suddenly and you are not sure of the cause make sure and monitor her closely until you have her seen.
