Hi!
My cat, Hercules, is 18.9 yrs old. He has had a history of periodontal disease and has lost many teeth over the years. He is a diabetic in remission, and is otherwise healthy and vibrant, with a beautiful coat.

His front "cheek" appears swollen and he's not as vocal(oh, brother- it's almost nice!) as usual. I'm 99% sure that he has an inflammation of a molar, having already experienced this.

I have a "never opened" bottle of Clavamox that has been refridgerated in very cold conditions, but it's dated 11/10/05. I shook it for the first time tonight. It has an ocre-colored cast to it. Is this the normal color? Can I give it to him to help fight whatever is going on? He doesn't seem to have a fever- his ears and nose are cool, but he's
showing signs of edema...

Is the medication okay? If so, I'd like to start him on it tonight.

Please advise!

With HUGE and humble gratitude,

Michele

Dear Michele,
If the clavamox has never been opened and is a powder - you can mix it with water and use it. However, if it has been mixed DO NOT under any circumstances use it. Tis product is only viable for three weeks after adding water. After that it becomes toxic.
It does sound like Hercules has an absessed tooth. THis is very serious because bacteria can enter his bloodstream and damage his orans.
If you are unable to use tha medication - you need to get Hercules to a veterinarian first thing tomorrow morning.
please let me know if you havr any more questions. I will be happy to help.
Very sincerely,
Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Hi Terri,

Thanks for answering me so quickly! The meds HAVE been mixed with water which is what had me concerned. I will toss it. ( i work in a hospital and am semi-hip to this stuff, even though I'm the director of computer-heaven!(osmosis, i guess!LOL).)

Anyway, should I apply a warm, damp compress to his face or will that exacerbate the situation? he seems to be happy eating the dog's dinner as I type this, but his face is definitely distorted...

What should I do if I can't get an appt.?

Thanks again!

Mich

Dear Michele,
Yes- you can apply the very warm conpresses as this will bring the infection to the surface. he really needs a new bottle of antibiotic so bacteria does not enter his organs. So you want to look into getting a bottle of clavamox ASAP.
In the meantime, put 100mg of vitamin C in his water daily as ths will help, couteract the infection.
Please let me know how he is doing. If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I will be happy to help in any way possible.
Very sincerely,
Terri

Thanks for following up with me. I already hit the "accept" button earlier on today, so please make sure that you get paid!

Hercules is much more talkative today and more active. I will try the compresses, but the site seems to have consolidated into a more defined little lump. I have no Vitamin C, but give him a multivitamin with Brewers Yeast. I think that and great food is what keeps him healthy. I usually grind up 1/2 of a tablet- should I give him a whole one?

Anyway, thanks for your help and let me know if you don't get credit for helping me- I have the emailed receipt that I can forward to you.

Enjoy your weekend and thanks again for being there- you're a special person to be doing what you do!!!
