HELP! Yesterday my 4-year-old neutered male threw up ...

Sent to Cat Experts April 21, 2006 9:52 p.m.

HELP! Yesterday my 4-year-old neutered male threw up twice, and spent part of the evening crying. Today his stomach appears to have settled, but he is extremely lethargic and clearly does not feel well. His stomach does not bother him when palpitated, his nose is cool and damp, but he has not been acting normally - he spent considerable time laying on the kitchen floor with his chin resting on the dog's water bowl, his gait seems slightly awkward, he is shedding a lot. I once had a male cat with a urinary blockage, but do not really remember the symptoms, and am concerned. He's not crying anymore, but obviously does not feel well, and I'm worried to death.

Hi,

This could be caused by a number of things including blockages or a parasite infection. Any time your dog is lethargic it is best for him to see his vet. With the behavior changes I would get him in. Most vets have a emergency contact number that you can reach them and ask about a Saturday appointment.

Make sure you are watching him for any new symptoms including blood in the vomit or feces. (if these symptoms arise a trip to the vet will need to be made soon).

Try feeding him some boiled chicken and rice to settle his stomach, also give him some pedialyte to help prevent dehydration.

I'm sorry - I was talking about a cat (I entered this site on a cat-health-help search, so I just assumed that's what we were talking about.) Is the answer the same?

Hi,

Sorry about that ;0) I think I'm going blind.

Yes it is the same any time a cat or dog is lethargic or changes in their behavior a trip to the vet is needed.
