My male cat is 8 years old and has always been very verbal.

My male cat is 8 years old and has always been very verbal. For the past few days he seems to have a problem passing his fur balls. As a result, he's been trying to be verbal, however his voice doesn't seem to come out. What's going on and how can I help him?
