I have a cat that had surgery 6 days ago for a removal of a cyst. Where the IV was hooked up to her paw she has continued to lick until it is red and swollent. What can I do to help her before we can get her to the vet?

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: no it does not look infected. it looks raw. it is the front left paw where they shaved it for what i am assuming the iv etc... she had a cyst that turned out to be an abcess of a steroid shot that she had received a month earlier for a gastrointestinal bout (she swallowed ribbon). i put neosporin on it to see if the taste would stop her from licking and hopefully to reduce the inflammation/itching whatever is causing her discomfort. she has licked even more fervently since i applied the neosporin. the fur has been licked off (about the size of a dime) and it is starting to look puffy and pink. she continues to lick and lick. other than that she is fine. no problems with the incision, eating, etc... she looks bright eyed. they did not give us any antiobiotics but they did give us metacan for inflammation and pain after surgery (for the incision). today she was 8 hours late receiving it (her last dose) as she hid under the bed when she saw me coming with the syringe. i just got home and quickly gave her the last dose. i am worried what will happen if she continues to lick this all night. we have no close after hours vet (an hour away) and i cannot think what to put on it to deter her from licking without making her even more crazy. help!
thanks so much!! hope this is coherent! it's been a long day.

You can discontinue the metcam as she should not be in severe enough pain six days later to need that.
However, you have got to find something tubular in the house that you could cover the sore with so she cannot lick it. You can use a childs sock, the sleeve of a glove or any thing shaped like that. You could get an elizabithian collar but that is really going to stress her further. If you have gauze, bandage, etc you could tape that over the neosporen as she really should not be licking that.If you cannot find anything to cover it with, wrap her in a towel for five minutes each time you apply it so it can soak in.
You can also put plain vaseline on ut as it will not hurt her to lick that.
Let me know if you come up with anything we can use. I will stand by.

I will stand by - let me know what you find.
If you have a childs sock, put the foot part on her foot - then securely tape the top part to her leg. Leave the body of the sock losse so air can circulate. By the time she works it off - it will be morning.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: ok i will try that. i found some medical tape as well. why do you suppose it is bothering her? when they have surgery what is it that gets attached to her leg? her neck and leg were shaved. her neck doesn't seem to be bothering her and she has been put under before for teeth cleaning with no problem.

It is possible she has developed an infection. Could even be staph and it is hurting her so she is motivated to try to heal it by licking.
If it does not look better by morning - have your vet take a look at it.
Please let me know how she is tomorrow.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: hi
i took her to the vet
it is just raw
they gave me a numbing spray which doesn't seem to be working
and an antiobiotic just in case
i guess she got irritated at the shaved fur and went to town
?
nothing seems to be working
i put the e collar on her
she hates that and is absolutely miserable
thanks for your prompt response and help
i was worried
thanks!

You are very welcome!
Try to use the e collar as little as possible as that is going to give her a lot of stress that she does not need right now. See if the numbing spray wil relieve the discomfort enough so she will stop the licking.
The antibiotic is a good idea as she may develope and infection without it.
Please keep me updated on her (name?) progress.
Best wishes,
Terri
