my cat has not been picking up her tail for the past few days. she just walks around with the tail dragging the ground. she is otherwise eating, grooming, and acting relatively normally. she can move the tail, so it does not seem to be broken, but she must be experiencing some sort of discomfort somewhere. do you have any idea what this could be?

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Hi Terri,

My cat is around 5-6 years old. She does not have any potty problems that I know of - she is going regularly. She has not been outside, and I can't determine anything that led up to this. We left out in the morning and everything seemed to be normal; came back that afternoon and she was dragging the tail. She is a long- haired cat with a very big fluffy tail, so it was immediately very noticeable.

On the first day, my daughter touched the tail and she would meow. Yesterday, when my daughter touched the tail, she did not react. Today it is pretty much the same. She does not appear to be depressed, although she has been slightly less vocal than usual and has been keeping herself closer to the ground. I was happy to find her jumping off the couch when I walked in from work this afternoon. (She usually gets in trouble for that :-)

Dear friend,
This usually relates to a spinal issue or constipation. As you know the tail is an extention of the spine and contains bones and discs. Since she was not outdoors, she may have jumped or fallen and slipped a disc or dislocated a vertibrae.Initially, you can apply wery warm compresses or a warm heating pad three times a day. You can aso sprinkle a quarter of a teaspoon of turmeric (curcumin) in her food as this is a natural anti inflamatory. Do not give her any human OTC's as most are toxic to cats.
If it does not clear up in a couple of days, gets worse or she stops eating, you will need to see the vet with her.
Please let me know if you have any more questions. I will be more than happy to help in any way possible.
very sincerely,
Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: That makes so much sense - Thank You very much! I appreciate your remedies and will try the compress and turmeric. Am I applying the compress to the spine/back or the actual tail, or both?

Thanx Again for your help!!!
