At 8 years old, it is possible his system has become intolerant to the grains that are used for fillers in supermarket dry food. Any dry is really bad for a cat with constipation or hard dry stools.
I would try switching him over to canned food as that should immediately soften his stool. You can also give him a half teaspoon of mineral oil 3 times a week.
The pumpkin is good but he needs more moisture in his colon that he can only get if he eats canned food.
Please let me kow if you have any more questions. I will be more than happy to help.

Here is the problem with can food. He won't eat can food. This cat is so picky he wont even eat seafood, tuna, table scraps nothing. All he will eat is dry food. He won't even go outside he refuses. So what do I do force him to eat can food my other cat she loves can food him he turns his nose up to it.

Dear Gary,
If he will not eat any canned, you need to switch him to a dry food that is high quality and contains no fillers. You can try nutro, felidae, wellness, science diet, etc.
In addition, give him a half teaspoon of mineral oil three times a week with a dropper. you can also get a product called lactulose from your vet.
It is most likely the ingredients in the purina are causing his constipation.
Let me know if you would like to see some websites for better food choices for him.
best wishes,
Terri
