My 2 yr old male cat, Alex, has developed a very strong ammonia odor to his urine. I have watched carefully but seen no other problems in the litterbox area. What could cause this? Alex was neutered before I adopted him as a kitten. Thank you.

Hi Patsy,
That strong ammonia scent to alex urine could be indicative of a urinary tract infection comng on so I would keep o very sharp eye out for any developing symptoms. If you see Alex straining in the litterbox with little or no production or any blood in his urine you will want to see a vet immediately.
It is a good idea to get him to drink as much water as possible so you will dilute his urine. Do not feed him any dry food - he should eat canned only as that contains a lot of moisture.
Please let me know if you have any more questions. I will be more than happy to help.
Best wishes,
Terri
BTW: I also have a cat named Alex! He will be 16 on may 18th and he is the light of my life!
