I have a very shy (indoor only) 6.5 year old female calico cat and she was recently examined via stethoscope by a new vet that said she heard a murmur. The murmer was not graded by the vet. She recommended a visit to the Vet Cardiologist for a check. I am very worried about the HCM condition I've read about in the literature and online. Is it possible that my cat was stressed when examined and that she is actually okay? She's a loud purrer and was purring when examined.   She is not showing any other signs of trouble presently.

Yes! It is VERY possible that stress contibuted to your cats anxiety. In addition, many cats (and people) have harmless murmurs and live a completely normal life with them.
Before you run to a cardiologist - I suggest you have a mobile veterinarian evaluate your cat. She will not be under stress at that time because she will be in her own home. It is difficult for a DVM to grade a heart murmur without an EKG and your veterinarian may not have that eqipment.
Since she is 6 and a half and shows no signs of ilness, it is very possible she can live a purrfectly normal life dispite this issue.
Please let me know if you have any more questions. I will be more than happy to help in any way possible.
Very sincerely,
Terri
