Our cat has had three bouts of pancreatitis over the last year--all have been associated with elevations of his sugar and what was called transient diabetes. This last bout was severe but we were able to take him home from the hospital within 5 days at which time he was back on insulin. On the 10th day we had him at the hospital all day for his sugar levels to be tested along with other testing. His sugar had gone too low and insulin was stopped. However, surprisingly he had an extremely low white cell count which was dangerous. We put him on antibiotics for 5 days and he was scheduled to be rechecked this week. On Sunday, he seemed to be ill again with signs of pancreatitis. We took him back to the hospital and his sugar was highly elevated. During that day, his other bloodwork came back with an even lower white cell count as well as his red cells being way too low. His condition worsened throughout the day and his white, red and platelet levels were dropping. He was bruised all over his body and by night he had had a seizure, was having trouble breathing we had to put him to sleep. He was in very bad shape. The doctors had indicated that we would have then thought about a bone marrow test because of his blood level results and that they feel this ultimately is what caused him to rapidly decline. Our question is, can the bloodwork change so rapidly and decline so severly over the course of one week? Also, is pancreatitis associated with any of these symptoms or was there an underlying disease that we did not detect earlier?
Please respond. We are grieving so much for our friend and are blaming ourselves for not seeing something that may have been there.
