Question

i recently adopted a 2 year old DMS gray tiger..she is ...

Sent to Cat Experts February 14, 2006 3:40 p.m.

i recently adopted a 2 year old DMS gray tiger..she is current on all shots, etc., and tested for hiv/leukemia..both negative..i took her to my vet for verification that she is healthy..other than ear mites, my vet believes she looks very healthy.. she was adopted through the humane society..nonetheless, it's been just shy of 3 weeks since we got her home and she has had watery eyes (which only occurs after she is awake for several hours) and diarrhea...at this time, i am assuming that the diarrhea is caused by the fact that i was feeding her my recently deceased kittens' kitten food...i changed her to adult food yesterday and bought her a much larger litter box for she seems to start/ finish before the time is up...my vet has not yet called me back as to a pill or dosage of an antidiarrheal medication..just wondering what the chances are that it's the food or a cross between food, new home and ear mite medication?
please advise...
thank you
concerned new mother

It is a wonderful and admirable thing to adopt a shelter cat. However, they almost always arrive with health issues. Your new "furry child" most likely has an upper respiratory infection and the intestinal parasite coccidia or giardia. These bacterium are VERY common in shelters and catteries and wherever there are many cats.
Have you vet put her on a round of Clavamox and flagyl. That will clear up the URI and the parasite. He can also give her a shot of Ivermecten to clear out the mites. Some vets do not treat URI's in cats because they feel it is viral. However, I disagree with that method because serious secondary infections (like pneumonia and bronchitis) can develope from an untreated URI. Additionally, the weakened immune system of a shelter cat will not be strong enough to knock out the UTI without a little help.
Thank you for adopting this dear cat and saving her life. You are a wonderful person. The world needs more people like you!
May God bless you and those you love!

hi, terri... you seem qualified enough for this type of situation..granted i've only changed her diet yesterday but she is still very "runny"..i wonder if i should hold back her liquid intake as well as food..she's a grazer at this time, drinks very little at times...maybe i should hold back on these intakes and try a small amount of immodium...

Relist:
Just letting Teri know that the fecal test just came back and she was totally correct when "giardia" may have been the cause..
