Since he is a large cat and probably very muscular((muscle weighs more than fat) he is probably not as overweight as you think. Putting him a on a diet is very dangerous and can seriously Compromise his health. Letting him out to exercise is not a good idea either. It is also very dangerous for cats outdoors these days cars, other animals, toxins, human creeps, etc. The best thing to do is to speak with your vet about how overweight he actually is. You may be surprised to find that he is in the normal range for a large cat.At eight years old he may have a thyroid problem so have that tested as well.If it is underactive, medication can be prescribed. The vet will also advise you on which food in what quantity is best. You can exercise him by pulling a string around and having him chase it.This is far safer then letting him go oudoors.
