My cat Max who is three years old and always been healthy has a harsh cough, won't eat or drink, is lethargic when usually strong and playful. He let me hold him all day when he usually does not like to be held. We took him to the vet yesterday afternoon. His chest xray was clear, his test for feline Leukemia and Aids were negative. His xray did show as mild clouding at the trachea which the vet thought might be a hair ball. We then took him right away to an emergency pet hospital. They wanted to do a swallowing test on him, give him IV fluids, and do a CBC, electrolytes, and enzyme profile. Then maybe an endoscopy. (and I know all of this is very important.) This would have cost us between $1000.00 and $3000.00 which we could not afford. So, we came home with Max and started giving him some beef broth with a little sugar mixed in with a syringe which he tolerated without choking or vomiting. His respiration was not worsened by the syringe feedings. So I feel that he probably did not apsirate. I am wondering if, since we live in south Florida in a rented house that the hurricanes of 2004 demolished the roof and a new one had to be put on, and the real estate people said the mold had been totally cleaned, if that might not be true about the mold. Could it be that Max the Cat (as we affectionately call him) who loves to sleep on the top of the wall on the plant shelve close to the ceiling and air conditioner ducts might have gotten to much contact with mold spores and is having a severe reaction? We love him so much and want to help him, but we aren't able to afford the treatment suggested. What do you think? Thanks you so much for your answer. Paula

Is he near any plants that he could have ingested some of the leaves? If so this could be a toxic reaction in him and yes mold spores can cause a reaction just like it can with us. Without the proper testing it may be hard to determine the exact cause but I would not let him near any plants or near the ceiling if you think that the roof or house has a mold has not been totally removed and you may want to think about having someone test the house for this possibility. I do also suggest that you look into www.carecredit.com which provides financing for pet emergencies as this could help you to afford to get him the care he needs then you can make payments. Call your veterinarian to make sure they accept it as most do and you can apply right online or by the toll free number on the website all you need is the veterinarians name pratice name address and phone number and they give a reply right away. This might be the route for you to go to get him the tests and treatment that he needs to determine the exact cause of what has happened to bring this on so suddenly as it would depend on how long he has been exposed to the possible mold to know if this could be the cause of the reaction he is having. I feel the fluids and testing would be best for him and carecredit can help greatly and you make $15-$20 dollar payments monthly, make sure when you apply you give the highest dollar amount the care may cost so they approve the amount needed for treatment according to the estimate given to you.

Thanks Cheryl. We were told about Care Credit at the vet's, but after 9/11 my husband lost his job, we lost our house, and things have not been good for us fiancially. I did try to appy online just now anyway and was denied. Prior to 9/11 we had great credit. Max is the same. Still not eating or drinking and that really worries me because he was always such a little glutton! I got rid of the plants this am. I opened all the windows and put the fan on. I cleaned dusty surfaces and washed all dish clothes, towels, etc. that were waiting to be washed. It's hard for me because I have CHF and need total bilateral knee replacements. But, I always try to take good care of Max and my other car Natalie who is older, but in great health. Max is more indoors than out and Natalie is more outdoors than in. And he is the one who is sick. So, that says something to me. I will take him back to the regular vets soon if he doesn't start at least drinking. So, maybe she can give him some IV fluids. Thanks again. God bless......Paul
