Question

Sent to Cat Experts October 29, 2005 8:22 p.m.

my cat has a thick and crusty black discharge from his nose, chronic at least two weeks and it is in small quantity-the size of a fingernail clipping. What is it?

Optional Information: Age: <1; Male; Breed: feline
Already Tried:
Discouraged cat from opening his box lid because he used his nose to open it.--At first I thought his black nose discharge was from broken capillaries. But today I collected the discharge and put it in water to see if it dissolves like dried blood does and it didn't. It stayed clumped. I am a concerned and loving cat person and my Buddy deserves to be healthy

Does it look like flaky skin? Or is it truly dried discharge from the nose?

Well the substance is not flaky, and it is just outside each nostril. It follows the contour of the nostril and is only present underneath the nostril opening. The substance forms a clump that is long and thin and wider in the middle ,like a fingernail clipping.

(which is what leads me to beleive that it is discharge}

However I have not yet observed the substace in the process of leaving the nostril. Black substance is porous and cotains a lot of small hairs. it looks like kraft foam and it's consistancy is [for lack of a better word] crispy. Substance does not stick well and it dries and falls off whole[clump does not flake or disintergrate in any way.

thank you so much for your time and expertise,

Do you think that this merits a($) vet's visit? Can you advice me of organizations that may help me $? This cat is neutered and has ALL of his shots. uh currently and temporarily unemployed, cat is well fed and loved, i would hate for present circumstances to affect his health.

again thank you so much
