my cat has a fat upper lip area. What is it?

My cats upper lip has been fat for a few days.....a couple days ago it looked as if he and the other cat had been playing too rough and the lip got scratched. He continued to lick it, so that probably triggered the swelling even more...
I'd rather not take him to the vet if I don't have to.....he gets REALLY stressed on vet trips and I'd rather save him the mental anguish if possible.... should I wait it out a few more days?
