Question

Cat possibly stopped up

Sent to Cat Experts September 05, 2005 6:38 p.m.

I recieved a new full grown cat 4 days ago that traveled twelve hours by car to get here. Came into a new house, new people, new cat companion (has never been around another cat). I isolated the new cat. And started feeding in canned and dried CD cat food. She had never eaten canned food before. She had a very small bowel movement about two days ago and now seems to be stopped up. I cleaned out the liter box this am and when I came home from work there were foot prints in there but nothing else. Her tummy is very tight. What can I do for her tonight as there are no vets open. It is also going to be very hard to get her to a vet as she doesn't know me and I may not get her in a carrier. Please help. Would it help if I gave her butter or olive oil?

You can see if a small amount of oil will help her loosen up. Or maybe better you could see if she will drink some milk which can also act as a mild laxative.
Also see if you can get her to drink more maybe offer some chicken soup or some other broth - home made usually works best.
Leave the carrier in the room with her with a nice bed in it - when not forced cats often choose to snuggle up in a safe carrier.
If she is also not urinating then you need to get her to a vet tonight as she may have a blockage and that could be life threatening. You can read about that here

and about constipation in cats here

Hope this helps you!
