Cat doesn't use litterbox

I have a female domestic short hair cat. She is about 11 yrs old. Recently within the last 2 or 3 months she has been going to the bathroom on the floor. She still urinates in the litterbox, but the refuses to drop any solids in the box. Could she be sick and trying to tell me?
