Cat swallowing hard

Sent to Cat Experts August 08 09:08 PM

My 10-11 year old male cat is swallowing hard, like when we humans have a sore throat. Could it be a sore throat (not as urgent), or could it be something he swallowed stuck in his throat (very urgent)? He seems calm, it just seems uncomfortable.

Reply to Andrea J Cecur DVM's Post: No problem breathing. In fact I don't think he's swallowing hard anymore. He ate, vomited, and all seems to be well. Although I would like to know if cats can get sore throats like humans.

I'm glad your kitty is feeling better. He may have had a small wad of hair stuck somewhere in his pharynx causing irritation, which was flushed out with the vomiting. Cats can get viral upper respiratory infections causing what we would call a sore throat, but if he is otherwise healthy, properly vaccinated and not in contact with other cats it's not very likely to occur.
