(Not a Cat Question?)

heat and scared cats
Sent to Cat Experts August 08 06:35 PM

I recently brought home two Himilayan yr old cats from the local animal shelter. They spent two nights locked in our living room. We opened the doors and the next night they ventured (ran) up into our attic! It is very hot up there and I am worried about their safety. I keep bringing fresh water up and they have food and litter, but will they come out to drink even if they are scared? (Very scared) What should we do? My other three cats spend alot of time up there even when it is very hot, but they are not afraid to come out. Thanks for your opinion.

As your other cats spend time there without being harmed these new ones may be OK.
If you are worried about their stress levels keeping them from coming out then you might want to try Feliway the cat appeasing pheromone to help reduce stress. This is available at pet supply stores and online.
Cats often will follow another cat's lead to help them decide a space is safe to use so the fact they went up there (not fearing the other cats) may actually be a good sign that they will follow your other cat's lead in other things.
Call your cats down for special food treats and let the new cats hear and smell the positive interactions. That too may help them get comfortable enough to come back down stairs.
Make a point of petting your cats and leaving your scent on them for the newcomers to get used too.
If they show up ignore them until they come over to you to solicit attention.
I'd leave dry food upstairs and feed the yummy canned food downstairs.
You can always see if you can add a fan blowing into the attic area to move the air to help them be more comfortable too.
Hope this helps you!
