Water Drinking Habits and Cats

My cat normally does not seem to drink very much water but today he is drinking a ton of water. Is this a sign of a possible problem or do they drink a lot sometimes?

A big change in habits can indicate a health issued. Cats with diabetes or liver problems may drink a lot as may cats with kidney disease.
I would consider taking him to a vet for a check up as long as you know for sure he has not been eating something really salty or dry today that may have made him thirstier than normal.
