Cat issues

Sent to Cat Experts July 15, 2005 7:04 a.m.

My cat has eaten some plastic easter grass, and ugh, it hasn't quite passed through his system. He is walking around with it hanging out of his butt. Should I be concerned that it may be stuck inside his digestive tract? Also, is there a reason my cat loves to eat plastic? I have to be viligent about grocery bags, saran wrap, any little piece of plastic...he had to get into the trash to get the easter grass.

A similar thing happend to somebody elses dog while I was there, the dog had eaten a household rag. You might want to wait untill the plastic has worked it's way out by itself so you wouldn't risk damaging the cat's digestive tract. If there's a piece that keeps hanging out which would be pretty disturbing (both to you and the cat I can imagine) you could try to cut that piece off. If the plastic doesn't come out after a while you could go to a vet to remove it.

About the cat eating the plastic, there's not much you can do about that, unless keeping the plastic away from the cat and training it not to eat plastic in the same way you train a cat not to urinate in the house.

I'm looking for a definitive answer from a vet. Need to know if I have to take my cat in today.
Thanks anyway.

Yes, you should be concerned that it is stuck especially because it will not come out on its own all the way. You should call your vet immediately to see what he suggests and likely a visit is in order. DO NOT pull it out yourself as it could be stuck on something vital and you may cause more damage than good by trying to remove it yourself.

There's a chemical component in the makeup of some plastic bags that appeals to some cats -- sometimes very strongly. Since he is so powerfully attracted to plastic, you need to make sure your cat does not have access to plastic bags.

Here are some tips on preventing your cat from getting plastic to eat:
