Question

feline allergy to flea's

Sent to Cat Experts June 23, 2005 5:23 a.m.

He's 18 yold and has allergies to flea bites and almost bare from his back legs to about half his tail. He had this issue many years ago. I am treating fleas as naturally as I can this year as both my cats got severly ill last year from advantage. Is there anything else I can do to prevent further hairloss other than getting him the hormone shot?

If you suspect allergies are the cause:

Cats don't just have allergies to food. They also have allergies to products, household cleaning solutions and fleas. It only takes one flea to start the process and it might continue even after the fleas are gone.

A vet can also provide meds that will help with hair loss, any secondary fungal infections and will make your cat feel better.

Some cats get a great deal of relief from a diet change to a low allergy diet. Your vet can help you pick a product that will be best for your cat.

If you don't have the cat on frontline or other prescription flea product, you will want to do that as soon as you can. Frontline is more gentle than advantage. This is imperative with cats who have flea allergies.

You should also get the cat started on a supplement that contains omega three fatty acids. Good skin starts on the inside.

You should also try to reduce the amount of allergens that he inhales in the home. Cats that have allergies to fleas often have allergies to dust, pollen, etc.

Hair loss under the chin could be feline acne. If you suspect this, you will want to discontinue use of metal bowls and be sure to sanitize them well. You can also try an over the counter acne medication and see if it helps.

Good luck!

I am sure it is a flea allergy and he is 18 yold. I had used bio-spot recently, ultra-sonic collar, changed diet to an all natural healthier one, although I will get one for allergies too and have been giving him garlic/yeast tabs. I also have a new sweeper with HEPA due to come today. I will also get the omega 3 supplements. What makes frontline gentler than advantage because last year I thought they was going to die on the advantage it was horrible. I have had bad experience in California with vets and would like to knowas close as possible exactly what meds or injections would be given for flea allergies PLEASE if you could just tell me some recommendations or ones that could be used.

THANK YOU so much and GREATLY appreciated so I am well informed.
