Sent to Cat Experts June 16 08:43 PM

My cat is coughing and breathing hard. She cries very differently now as well as if she has a severe sore throat. Please help me. Thank You

Short time voice loss could mean that she has an upper respiratory infection. Viral illnesses are also a possibility. If this is the case, your cat should recover with time. Keep an eye on the secretions from the nose or eyes. If they change color, the cat may need some antibiotics.

Long term voice loss could be a result of more serious factors and you should see the vet to rule out an obstruction, cancer, etc.

I am leaning toward the short term causes because you are seeing coughing as well. If this continues, you will want to see your vet to get an exam and possibly antibiotics.

Let me know if you have more questions

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: Is there something I can do for her while she is suffering? Should i feed her grass, olive oil on her food, honey, milk? Should i rub her upper chest. What color secretion is normal and what is not normal. When she is laying down with her eyes closed, i can hear her almost regurgitating and then a loud hiccup type cough. She seems more tired now. She is 5 yrs old, an indoor cat and goes out a lot in the summer time.

Since she seems to be struggling, I would see the vet first thing tomorrow. There are no over the counter meds that are safe for cats.

Neither green nor yellow secretions are normal. If you see this, she has an infection and you need antibiotics.

If she's having trouble breathing through her nose, you can use a little pediatric nasal saline drops (not adult) in each nostril to clear the secretions.

I would not change her diet at all because this can cause severe gastric upset.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: I cannot afford to go to the vet. That is the problem. They will charge an arm and a leg. I am hoping it is something minor as you mentioned in the first reply. She still goes out and she eats normally. She just has a voice change and hiccup cough. That is what bothers me.
