Hello, Approximately 1 month ago our cat Felix went missing for about 1-2 days. He came home skinny, sore, lethargic. I took him to the vet and he had a temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius. He was given an injection and another one the next morning and he improved. The last couple of weeks he seemed back to his normal self. Then a few days ago, he became very quiet, would not eat, would not go outside and just lays around all day sleeping. I took him to the vet again today and he has a temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius. He again has sore areas along his spine and was given an anti-inflammatory injection. He has to go back for blood tests and x-rays next Monday. I am really worried about him - can you provide any possible answers for me? Wendy

Dear Wendy,

I am so sorry Felix is so ill.

He may have been injured or ingested a toxin.

He could have damaged a disc or vertebra since the anit-inflammatory seemed to have helped.

Cats do not have whims like people. Whenever they stop eating they are either ill or in pain. If his blood work was unremarkable and he has no other symptoms like fever, diarrhea, constipation, infection, etc then there is something going on that is difficult to ascertain - but it exists nevertheless. Sometimes a cat can have an abscessed tooth or root that is in the gum. They can ingest a piece of plastic that in not perceivable in an xray. They can be mildly dehydrated or have a metabolic or organic imbalance that is too slight to read on a test. He may also feel nauseated.

If your cat is not diabetic begin by giving him two droppers (cc size) of unflavored pedialyte every ten minutes for an hour. Next water down(plain water) canned cat food or baby food chicken or turkey with no onion or garlic and give only one dropper every ten minutes for another hour. Wait two hours and repeat both. When he feels hydrated he will lick up the gruel on his own.

Boil chicken or fish as the scent of food cooking awakens the appetite sensor in the brain.

Please get started ASAP and let me know how things are going. I hope we can get him eating an better!

Very sincerely,

Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Thank you for your help with Felix. I took him to the hospital again today and they ran some x-rays. The x-rays showed that he had fluid in his lungs. He was transferred to an emergency veterinary hospital. Further tests after draining the fluid showed that he had a pyo-thorax (I don't know if that is spelt right). He also had a heart murmur. We made the terrible decision to euthanase him. I am very upset, but hopefully it was the right thing for Felix.
